Plug in "Vince Vance" in any search engine, and you'll find he is a legend even on the internet. Most sites celebrate his place in music. I first knew him in the 60's as a man of letters... And that's how he's featured on this particular page... with his poetry and prose. --Steve Bellas "The best rock and roll band in the business... in our price range." --Sid "The Professor" Arroyo

June 5, 1955. It was raining only
slightly, but the fog was quite thick. A punk named Vince Vance had taken
his Harley-Davidson up to 85 miles per hour on an seemingly forever
winding New Orleans path that follows the course of the Mississippi. They
call the stretch, "River Road." Slowing down, only enough to
negotiate the rude twists and turns meant probable survival for a reckless
ride on some future night. Vince Vance sneered at this notion of
feint heart. His right hand began to ache as he refused to ease up
any more on the throttle. No matter. He was convinced he would live forever.
As he coaxed the Harley a touch faster on a rare straight-away, Vince saw
a nutria rat darting across River Road. Vance may have been an ardent punk, but he revered
all living things. He violently swerved. The nutria made it safely to the other
side of the road. Vince Vance went on... to immortality.
That may or may not be true. I've heard various takes from fans and VVV historians for over 30 years. What is certain is that Andy Stone, pianist, singer, and poet, first heard the Vince Vance alliteration from his friend, John Patterson. In 1971, Vince Vance and the Valiants was born. Co-founder, Jim Viator more or less became Vance on stage. But the responsibility of the legend eventually fell to Andy. And if there is the ghost of a punk who perished on a Harley that night, he travels and lives within Andy Stone.

But

A man tried to sell his neighbor a new dog.
"This is
a talking dog," he said. "And you can have him for
five dollars."
The neighbor said, "Who do you think you're kidding
with this talking dog stuff? There ain't no such animal."
Suddenly the dog looked up with tears in his eyes.
"Please buy me, Sir," he pleaded. "This man is cruel.
He never buys me a meal, never bathes me, never
takes me for a walk. And I used to be the richest trick
dog in America. I performed before kings. I was in the
army and was decorated ten times."
"Hey!" said the neighbor. "He can talk. Why do you
want to sell him for just five dollars?"
"Because," said the seller, "I'm getting tired of all his
lies."

Shhhh . . . A Personal
Note From Vince . . .
Thank you for joining the fan club. The
people here
are the bestest people I have ever known. And they
share with me a great reason for living ... the love
of rockin' music and partying.
I designed some great tour shirts. Please check
them out. They are approved and the official fan wear
of Vince Vance Vanatics worldwide. Pick 'em up at
the Vince Vance Store at www.vincevance.com
To those of you I know personally I would like
to share something about the real "ME."
The whole truth is I NEVER pick up any "e" cards
that I am sent and I rarely go to unidentified,
"highly recommended" websites.
I have many good reasons.
And, though I sincerely appreciate the thought,
these are things I just can't do. I just travel so
much that I can't make them all. I do check out
the message boards from time to time. So I'll
see you there.

One afternoon, a wealthy lawyer was riding in the back of his limousine
when he saw two men eating grass by the roadside. He ordered his driver to stop
and he got out to investigate.
"Why are you eating grass?" he asked one man.
"We don't have any money for food," the poor man replied.
"Oh, come along with me then."
"But sir, I have a wife with two children!"
"Bring them along! And you, come with us too!" he said to the other
poor man.
"But sir, I have a wife with six children!" the second man answered.
"Bring them as well!"
Somehow they all climbed into the car, which was no easy task, even for a car as
large as the limo. Once underway, one of the poor fellows says, "Sir, you
are too kind. Thank you for taking all of us with you."
The lawyer replied, "No problem, the grass at my home is about two feet
tall."

Cruisin’
The Coast
© 2000/2001 Vince Vance, Troy Powers, Terry Houle
Down in Mississippi in the Autumn Sun
They drivin’ ‘cross the country just to have a little fun
Take a ’57 Chevy or a Little Deuce Coupe
A Hot Rod Lincoln or a GTO, too!
Like a gambler on a roll, turn the road into toast
Down in Mississippi Cruisin’ the Coast
From Texas and L.A. off of Route 66
Indiana, New York, even from the sticks
From the Louz-ee-ana swamps where Johnny got good
Old Surfer Boys in Woodies, still be polishin’ wood
Like a gambler on a roll, turn the road into toast
Down in Mississippi Cruisin’ the Coast
[drum break]
’39, ’49, 59’ candy apple, ’61, ’62, triple lacquer baby blue
Chop top, full drop, “Hey, there, carhop!”
I’ll do the drivin’. You just look out for the cops.
[instrumental]
Got a date with an angel you could never forget
Blazin’ with her high beams in a cherry Corvette
This clown pulls up beside me, gives my girl a little smile
Waves a hundred dollar bill to drag a quarter mile
The light turns green, we turn the road into toast
Down in Mississippi Cruisin’ the Coast
The title cut is dedicated to the
Gulf Coast Festival, Cruising the Coast, Mississippi's
largest outdoor event. It's the largest classic car and hot rod show in the
show; about
150,000 people and 4,000 cool muscle car, hot rods and classic cars will all be
there! The best part about it is me . . . well, and the band.
Here are the titles of some of the
killer cuts on the album:
Cruisin' the Coast (I
already told you about this one), See
Me Run (my personal story about
running all over the world my whole life),
This Little Girl of Mine (a great
little old school rocker about my dream girl),
All That Heaven Will Allow (a re-do
of a Springsteen tune that sets the tone for the whole album; the guitar ride in
this so Beatle-esque that you'll freak on it),
Thank You Mama (how did i get to be
such a rock n' roll animal? i had a rock n' roll mama. this is her story),
Boogie Rock (this is really off the
wall; the sounds that Doc has in this one will blow you away),
Contents Under Pressure (a song about
2 of my DJ buddies in Lake Charles that I wrote with Troy Powers),
Don't Let Them Tear Us Apart (a
haunting love story about a rich girl and a poor musician),
Chili Christmas (on the Texas/Mexico
border there is a different flavor to Christmas - it's chili) And much, much
more.
Vince Vance & The Valiants: A Personal Perspective
(an excerpt from the Vince Vance & the Valiants 1971-1996
25th Silver Anniversary Souvenir Program)
On September 18, 1971, the first performance of a new band playing on Bourbon Street in New Orleans, Louisiana, was about to take place. The beer-swilling, college crowd that usually partied at Your Father's Mustache were in for different musical treat on this particular "Friday Afternoon Club." The Gay 90's-styled banjo band was re-scheduled and wouldn't appear until after nightfall. Fred, the new general manager of The Mustache, a position that defied his boyish looks, was about to try out an idea that he had six months earlier. He believed that if the nostalgic ragtime music found a popular audience, so would 50's rock and roll. And he was determined to make it work against the better judgment of the owner. Looking back it was not such a major leap. But for a young man in his twenties, investing the time away from the usual format could make or break him. He really wasn't worried that day, though. Fred didn't have that luxury. He was enjoying the packed house, but made sure the pitchers of beer kept flowing. He walked in the back to check on the band that he had helped nurture and put together. They were ready. A few minutes later, ten men stepped on the stage and my life's work had begun.
I will never forget that show. We had seven encores. And the sheer, raw animal energy and desire displayed on that stage propels me even today. My name at birth was Andrew John Franichevich, Jr. Today, I am known as "Vince Vance." However, twenty-five years ago, it was changed to the Incredible Andy Stones the Pretty Boy of the Group." I am the last of the ten original performers. I was inadvertently assigned the responsibility of keeping the Vince Vance & the Valiants' name and legend alive. Jim Viator, co-founder, the original performer to be identified as "Vince Vance," and I were walking in the French Quarter on our way to rehearsal. We were talking about replacing a key member of the original group. I told him that I thought that I thought the guy was irreplaceable. And whether he meant it or not, he said, "The only one that's irreplaceable in this group is you." I mentioned that to him five years ago at out twentieth reunion and he said he didn't remember it. But I did. It seems foolish, in looking back to gear your life over an arbitrary statement. But, truthfully, that is exactly what I've done.
I can say it's been an exciting and worthwhile choice. I have had a dream life. I've probably heard more applause than should be anyone's share. I've traveled millions of miles to perform 5000 shows from Canada to South America, had breakfast in the White House and dinner at the Waldorf-Astoria. I've shook hands with the president and partied often with the royalty of Mardi Gras. We've played the Super Dome twenty times and for the Dallas Cowboys at the Super Bowl. Today, our corporate clientele reads like a list of Fortune 500 companies. The name Vince Vance & the Valiants, which was thought up by my friend John Patterson, has appeared in countless international newspapers and magazines from the front page of the Wall Street Journal to Billboard. VVV has appeared on hundreds of TV shows and video outlets from NBC where we were guest stars on This Is Garth Brooks, Tool to Country Music Television where our Christmas song plays annually, since 1989. We have released seven albums, many singles and got lucky with two number one hit records.
Some "thank yous" are in order. But I can't do it here, individually; there are just too many. So I have compiled this list of names, as accurate as possible for off the top of my head, to in some way note my appreciation for the magnitude of working people necessary to make a silver anniversary possible. I know Eve missed some of you. Please forgive me. In ~ way could this list indicate all the people and energies expended. However, I must mention the following stalwarts: To Fred Hendrix, "Thanks for thinking up something for me to do for the last twenty-five years." To Jim Viator, "Thanks for getting things going with me and entrusting me with the band." To my manager of sixteen years, Ed Cobb, "Thanks for your dedication to me and being the single most important force in keeping The Valiants working in an ever-changing marketplace." To Tommy Couch, Jr., president of Waldoxy Records, "Thanks for the record deals. Your belief in VVV made many dreams possible." To The Professor, "Thanks for the thirteen grueling years you gave to this band. Your performance is still unparalleled." To The Hood, "Thanks for ten years and the most unforgettable character." To Tchoupitoulas, "Thanks for your ten years and your great talent." To Troy Powers, "Thanks for your loyalty and immeasurable talents for ten plus years and counting." To our fans, "Thank you for your continued support and dedication. You were the main force that made it work!" And most of all, to all those who gave any part at all of your lives to this dream,
"Thank you from the bottom of my heart for being there. May God bless and keep you always!"

FREDDIE, THE FLYING FROG
Have you heard of a frog that could fly?
Well, before this poem, neither did I.
Fred didn't have wings and couldn't even hop,
But one day he would fly and never, ever stop.
It started long ago in the New Nighted States;
Fred was sitting on a lily pad looking for a mate.
You see Fred was lonely living on that pad;
He decided to get married and one day be a dad.
He wanted a froggy girl to notice his big hair;
But on top of Freddie's head, he was pretty bare.
He wanted a froggy girl to like his cool clothes;
But frogs don't have clothes as everybody knows.
And in New Nighted States it was always dark;
Even if Fred had such things no one could remark.
He sat there on that pad and croaked up at the moon;
The Moon Man laughed at Fred in his lonely lagoon.
But a lonely froggy girl heard Freddie croak the blues
And she croaked back to him, "Good things come in twos!"
Well, Freddie felt so good, his heart got oh so light
That our poor hero Freddie floated off into the night.
Up to the moon Fred floated, way into the sky;
When the Moon Man saw Fred, it gave him quite a fright.
Fred said, "Don't be frightened!" but Moon Man began to run
And ran so fast he woke up a thing we now call the sun.
When the sun saw a flying frog chasing the big moon,
The sun ran after Freddie and night turned into noon.
And the moon's still running, he's still scared of Fred
And sun still follows Fred and never goes to bed.
In the sky around the world, the three of them, they run;
It's how we get the day and Freddie thinks it's fun.
You see, Fred's still up there chasing after moon
And the sun still follows Freddie way past the afternoon.
And no more is the New Nighted States just nighted;
Half a day we're lighted and day and night's righted
And the states are now, United, all cause Fred is flighted.

Me
I may bend, but I won't break;
I'll keep a smile upon my face.
If things go wrong, I'll get a long,
'Cause I'll dance and sing a song.
I can fly in sleepy dreams
And touch star dust and hear moonbeams
And be anything I want to be.
Once I was a Christmas tree.
I've learned not to push and pull,
But make empty into full.
That for me is happiness
And that's the thing that I like best.
There are those who think I'm weird:
Pencilmen who stroke there beards,
But have they ever tasted loud
Or walked upon a snowy cloud?
God handed me the Rose of Trials.
So I must go a million miles.
I hope that distance I may run
To kiss blue skies and hug the sun
And love many, forgiving all,
Though I may rise or even fall.
I've never seen eternity,
So while I'm here, I'll perfect me:
A guy who loves a rainbow's hue,
Who laughs at the world and himself, too!

I LOVE ME AND ICE CREAM
I always say, "I love the sun!"
Because it makes me warm
But more than that I love your arms
You hold me and it's fun
I love the man in the moon
I love sweet dreams with you
I love clouds and skies so blue
I love me and ice cream and I love you
I love your heart and shiny eyes,
Your hand on walks through woods;
I love it when you say I'm good
And kiss my face three times.
I love to grow and sing and laugh;
I love to dance on wet grass;
I love birds and warm puppies, too;
I love me and ice cream and I love you.
Here's my hand and here's my heart;
Here's my smile, my best part.
If I'm sad, my eyes make dew.
I'm just a small person on the earth.
I love me and ice cream
And I love you.
